Origin:

甲骨文中,“各”像一只脚从外面走到门口,字的本义是“来”、“到”,后来这个意思一般写作“格”,“各”的意思主要是“每个”。

On ancient oracle bone inscriptions, “各” looks like a foot coming from the outside of a door. Its original meaning is “to come” and “to arrive,” which later was expressed in the character “格.” Rather, “各” mainly means “every.”

   各有所长  (gèyǒu suǒcháng): Each person has his merits

   各种      (gèzhǒng): all sorts of

   各个     (gègè)      : every; each

   各处     (gèchù)    : everywhere

   各半     (gèbàn) half-and-half; in equal proportions

Examples:

1. 每个人都各有所长,我们应该去发现他的优点。

    Měigerén dōu gèyǒu suǒcháng, wǒmen yīnggāi qù fāxiàn tā de yōudiǎn

    Everyone has his merits. We should try to find his strong points.

2. 柜台上摆着各种样式的杯子,我都不知道该怎么选择了。

    Guìtái shàng bǎizhe gèzhǒng yàngshì de bēizǐ ,wǒ dōu bùzhīdào gāi zěnme xuǎnzé le

    There are all kinds of cups on the counter. I do not know how to choose.
