Single’s day（单身节 Dānshēn jié）is a special festival which generally known as One’s day（光棍节 Guānggùn jié）. It is now widespread among the young people, it is the day to celebrate their bachelordom. November 11, One’s Day, originates from the number”11.11″ which shapes like four smooth stick, in Chinese the word “stick” has the meaning of bachelordom. So the One’s Day is an alternative festival for those who are still single. The special day was first appeared in the campus, then spreads through the Internet and other media, finally it forms an unique culture of One’s Day. Nowadays in China, more and more people choose to get married on that day.

The real origin of the One’s Day is still a mystery, there are all kinds of speculation and arguments about it. Among them the most credible one is that the Day was generated in the campus culture, but who was the first one to propose it is untraceable. In 1993, four senior students of Nanjing University made a discussion about how to get rid of the bachelor status on the day 11.11 and organized some activities. From then on, the One’s Day has developed into a fun culture in the universities in Nanjing（南京 Nánjīng） and even around the nation. With batch after batch of students bid farewell to the campus, the festival is gradually brought into the society, and is developing due to the large group of the single men and women.

Today, the Day has become a special day for the urban young people. On this day, several single friends get together, drinking, talking, going to KTVs and shopping, enjoying the happy time. This is the expression of aspiring love, it is reported that many young people choose that day for their marriage with hope of “single-minded love for life”.
